The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the sudden demise of Gilbert Andugu, the Secretary General of AFC Leopards, one of the country’s oldest and most respected football clubs. Andugu passed away on the morning of May 6, 2025, in Kitengela, Kajiado County, after a brief illness.
His passing has left a void not just within the Leopards fraternity but across the broader Kenyan sports landscape.
A Leader with a Vision for AFC Leopards
Gilbert Andugu was elected AFC Leopards Secretary General in June 2022, bringing with him a deep passion for football, club development, and community engagement. Before assuming this role, he served as the Chairman of Chairmen from 2016 to 2020. During his leadership, the club expanded its branch network from just 8 to 35 nationwide—a move that reconnected the team with its national fan base.
In office, Andugu worked diligently to streamline the club’s human resource operations and improve internal structures. His contributions were widely appreciated by both fans and football stakeholders.
A Final Bow Before the Mashemeji Derby
Tragically, his death comes just days before the Mashemeji Derby, the iconic clash between AFC Leopards and arch-rivals Gor Mahia. This timing has heightened emotions among supporters, with tributes pouring in from across Kenya.
Earlier this year, Andugu had announced he would not be defending his seat in the upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 29, 2025, citing personal reasons. Sadly, he will not witness the transition he had helped shape.
Tributes from the Club and Nation
In an official statement posted on the club’s social media pages, AFC Leopards wrote:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of our Secretary General, Mr. Gilbert Andugu. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. His contribution to the club will never be forgotten.”
Club patron Alexander Muteshi and several FKF officials also paid tribute to Andugu, praising his integrity, work ethic, and unwavering love for the Leopards.
A Legacy That Will Live On
Andugu’s leadership was not about fame but about rebuilding and reconnecting AFC Leopards with its roots. Whether it was through branch mobilization, youth programs, or administrative reforms, his efforts left a meaningful legacy.
He may be gone, but his vision for a stronger AFC Leopards will continue to inspire future leaders of the club.
